How to Declutter Your Closet (The Fun Way)

"Spring Cleaning" is a thing for a reason: everyone's doing it, and everyone's doing it this time of year. And they have been for a long time, dating this tradition back to when homes were heated and lit by wood and lanterns that left trails of soot on everything. When temperatures finally warmed in the spring, it was time to sweep all the dust of winter out and let some sunshine in.

It's pretty fun to see just how cyclical "Spring Cleaning" is!

"Decluttering your closet", though, came into focus fairly recently. It's easier than ever to overconsume anything and everything, and clothing is no exception. The need for a functional wardrobe means that you're probably editing it down at least once a year.

If you're reading this, regardless of season, there's no time like the present!

How can I make cleaning my closet more fun?

"How can I make ______ more fun?" is our specialty.

If everyone's doing it, why not do it together? Gather your friends or family for a "Closet Clear out" challenge, a fun way to keep each other accountable for downsizing while digging up some fashionable (or unfashionable) memories from years past.

Here's the template to add to your account:

Closet Clear Out

This is one task that holds a permanent place on the to-do list! I think we could all do a little downsizing of the old to make room for the new. ✨

How do I declutter my closet without regret?

Downsizing your closet can feel overwhelming, but here are a few different approaches to consider. The regret part is all up to you, though!

  • Use the 80/20 rule – Most people wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. Start by identifying your most-worn pieces.
  • Try the “hanger trick” – Turn all your hangers backward. After wearing an item, place the hanger correctly. After six months, donate or sell anything still on a backward hanger.
  • Ask yourself one key question – "Would I be excited to buy it again today?" If the answer is “no,” it’s time to let it go.

What is the best way to organize my closet after spring cleaning?

OK, so you actually decluttered. Now what?

After decluttering, maximize your closet space with these smart organization techniques:

  • Sort by category – A lot of people like to sort by color, and we can admit it looks good. But realistically, it might be more helpful to group similar items together (shirts, pants, dresses) to make finding clothes easier.
  • Use matching hangers – Slim hangers with grip create a uniform look and save space.
  • Maximize vertical storage – Install shelves or use hanging organizers for folded clothes and accessories.
  • Store seasonal clothing separately – Use vacuum-sealed bags or bins for out-of-season clothes to free up room, especially if you're working with limited closet space (which we all are)!
  • Label everything – Clearly labeled bins and dividers keep everything in its place.

Where can I donate clothes after decluttering my closet?

Beyond traditional donation centers, there are local, sustainable, and digital-first options for donating or repurposing clothing:

1. Online Clothing Donation Platforms

  • ThredUp – Offers a Clean Out Kit where you can send clothes for resale or donation.
  • For Days Take Back Bag – A recycling program that turns old clothes into new materials.
  • Give Back Box – Working with Kohl's, they let you donate clothing by shipping it in a reused box (prepaid labels available).

2. Peer-to-Peer Giving Apps

  • Buy Nothing Groups (Facebook & App) – Post items for free to local community members.
  • Freecycle – A nonprofit network for giving away items to people nearby.

3. Sustainable Clothing Brands with Take-Back Programs

  • Patagonia Worn Wear – Buy, sell, or trade in Patagonia clothing for store credit.
  • Madewell & Levi’s Denim Recycling – Drop off old jeans for discounts on new purchases.

4. Local Upcycling and Repair Shops

  • Many cities have fabric recycling centers or upcycling workshops that turn old textiles into new products.

And just like that, your closet is no longer a chaotic maze of forgotten fashion choices. By turning decluttering into a bit of a game, you’ve not only reclaimed your space but also made room for pieces you actually love to wear. Plus, you’re giving your pre-loved items a second life with people who can’t wait to put them to good use!
